Extension is beginning to consider what can be done to help meet the needs of the low-income single parent.Our recent study of primarily rural low-income single parents suggests a gap exists in support for these families that Extension seems ideal to fill.The single parent can help family members face these difficulties by talking with each other about their feelings and working together to tackle problems.Support from friends, other family members and the church or synagogue can help too.Because of this differing agenda between parent and child, tension can arise when mom or dad has a new boyfriend or girlfriend.

The girl was saying that she "missed her daddy," even though she’d never referred to him that way before.Over the past 20 years single-parent families have become even more common than the so-called "nuclear family" consisting of a mother, father and children.And typically, the family's finances and resources are drastically reduced following the parents' breakup.Single parent families deal with many other pressures and potential problem areas that the nuclear family does not have to face.
